Chapter Five
Chapter 5 of the Connected Educator tackles the topic of web tools used for expanding knowledge.Sheryl opens the chapter discussing how “knowledge construction comes from experimenting or building something yourself or collectively as a team using tools”. What I loved about this chapter was the idea that “you don't need to be a web expert to take advantage of these tools”. Many of the web tools that are offered are easy to use, don't let a new web tool stress you out. A web tools job is to make your job easier!
As someone who plans on working in the Public Relations and Advertising field, I see webtools being a major factor in my future occupation. In terms of advertising and marketing, the field has moved greatly to online. Web tools discussed in this chapter are tools I see myself incorporating in my future job. My favorite webtool discussed is the website twitter, chapter five states how twitter “connects you to a worldwide of people”. You can promote and talk about a project to thousands of people from your living room. Using twitter's features such as hashtags and private messages, I can communicate with the public and promote products.
Chapter Five states how “the best way to understand the tools is to experiment with them” which I agree with greatly. I admit, I struggle with technology. I do not consider myself technologically advanced. An example of this is with this class, at first I struggled with using schoology. After practice and time experimenting with the website, I now feel comfortable with using schoology and could even show a peer how to make an account, post an assignment, and comment on a post. Using web tools is just like learning to ride a bike, you have to practice to get better.
For my peers, was there ever a webtool you struggled with using at first? How did you overcome this?
