Chapter Six

Chapter Six of the Connected Educator  tackles the topic of personal networking. The chapter talks about how "networks help you leverage deeper connections and relationships, and from those networked relationships you grow a community of connected learners and leaders". What I thought was extremely interesting was how the chapter opens up with Sheryl talking about how networking used to be like in the early 1990s. She talks about using a science board named "Newton". I never heard of this before and I'm not sure how this science board works.

As someone who plans on entering the public relations and advertising field networking is a huge factor of my job. I am required to connect to the public and communicate through my company. Networking and creating bonds can result in huge positive results and can make or break my ability to promote/sell a product. If I have good relationships with the people I am promoting the products too, there is more likely to have a deeper conversation and go through with the sale. I like to think about how networking can also help me with my job because having someone mentor me in a way and share information and wisdom with me about my field can be super beneficial.

Tying back to my first paragraph, this can apply greatly to my future career path due to changes in technology used to network. Sheryl's discussion of the science board named "Newton" really opened my eyes that resources have changed and adapted over the decades. This shows me how different trends of communication comes and goes. As someone going into the public relations and advertising field, this means I must be adapting fast to the newest forms of networking and communication. My job is gonna be heavily based of social skills and cues, if I'm not constantly networking I will suffer greatly. I went into this class not being one hundred percent sure about how to use the website Linkedin, yet I will continue to learn how to use it properly to stay as in touch with trends socially in terms of networking. This is what I will have to do with my future occupation.

Now I have a question for my classmates- what is your personal favorite way to network?
